Liverpool have agreed a fee with Newcastle for the services of Spanish defender Jose Enrique. The player is a left footed full back who has impressed at Newcastle, particular last season in the Premier League.
Enrique, who is 25, joined Newcastle from Villarreal for £6.3 million back in 2007. There is no confirmation on the fee that Liverpool has bid for Enrique. Liverpool has always struggled to find a suitable left footed player for quite some time. Fabio Aurelio was a regular since Riise left Liverpool, but injuries stopped his chances of playing in the first team. Roy Hodgson last season signed Paul Konchesky from Fulham, but that didn’t turn out so well, with him being sold in January. Players like Agger, Johnson and Carragher have had to fill in at left back since but seems now that they have the ideal play for the position.
Jose Enrique just had one year left on his contract, and it seems Newcastle would rather cash in for him now, then sell him for nothing next season. Enrique is due to have a medical at the club soon, and could be in the squad for Liverpool’s first game of the season against Sunderland on Saturday.
